How You Can Be Prepared

In the event of a mud or flood emergency, your government agencies will provide many essential services; however, every area resident has a responsibility to take certain measures to protect himself.

It is extremely important that you be prepared to evacuate in a hurry or to remain in your home for an extended period of time if your exit route is obstructed.  Following are some tips to help you be prepared:

Call 9-1-1 to report any flooding or property in danger.

Be prepared to leave in a hurry (have a "grab and go" kit) or shelter in place.

Do NOT attempt a rescue without proper training and equipment.

Keep children and pets away from fast-moving streams and high water.

Stay away from ground level electrical transformers that are inundated by water.

If your basement is flooded, try to turn off electrical and gas appliances from an outdoor source.

Move to higher ground, away from rivers, streams, irrigation ditches, and storm drains.

Do NOT drive around barricades.

Call 970.429.1800 for preparedness information.
